The Toshiba Canvio Basics has a well-designed and compact design (109 x 74 x 14 mm and 146 g for the 2 TB version). We acclaim the matte hardened plastic case that does not retain fingerprints. Vibrations remain minimal on this very quiet hard drive. This external hard drive outshines the competition in terms of performance. It’s surprisingly fast for a platter hard drive, hitting a throughput of 140MB/s read and 137MB/s write for a large 20GB file. It also averages a good 119MB/s read and 137 MB/s write for medium-sized files. The Canvio Basics finally shows an excellent score on CrystalDisk Mark with 149 MB/s in sequential reading and 153 MB/s in sequential writing.

WD My Book Duo: high-end professional storage space
The WD My Book Duo de Western Digital adopts the same design as the brand’s latest products, with an attractive glossy and textured black finish. The case is a good size and weighs 2.37 kg (for the 20 TB version, a huge storage space), bulky but still transportable in a bag. However, there is no power button, requiring the data storage drive to be electrically unplugged to turn it off. The WD My Book Duo is configured in Raid 0 by default, for accelerated data read/write, offering high performance up to 388 MB/s read and 370 MB/s write. By switching to Raid 1, the data is duplicated for more security, but the performance is reduced to 130 MB/s in reading and 207 MB/s in writing.

Toshiba Canvio Ready: the best value for money external hard drive
The Toshiba Canvio Ready retains a basic black plastic design, which is quite well built for this entry-level portable external hard drive. For the 2 TB version, the dimensions (109 x 78 x 14 mm) and weight (147 g) make the Canvio Ready system very easily transportable. Toshiba’s Canvio Ready stands out for its high performance compared to its HDD competitors. In fact, during our data transfer tests, it posted speeds of 148 MB/s in reading and 158 MB/s in writing on Crystaldiskmark. These results are very impressive for a hard drive that is not particularly high-end.

Samsung T7: the best portable hard drive
In version 1 To, the Samsung T7 standard retains the same compact dimensions as the T7 Touch (85 x 57 x 8 mm), which makes it easily portable in a pocket with a weight of only 63 g. The aluminum housing provides certain impact resistance and efficient heat dissipation. Using CrystalDiskMark, read speeds reach 957 MB/s, which is quite close to the 1050 MB/s announced by Samsung for the T7. Write speeds are however slightly lower with an average of 716 MB/s. However, when testing a multitude of photo files, the speed is a little more disappointing, reaching only 321 MB/s in writing.
