Multipurpose kitchen tool. This is the knife you will use for chopping, the flat blade can be used to crush ingredients such as garlic cloves and whole peppercorns. Sizes typically range from 6 to 12 inches, measured from the tip of the blade to the beginning of the handle. The size you will buy is the right size for you, so hold the knife in your hand to see if it is comfortable, not too heavy but not too light.
Often called a bread knife, this thin, sawtooth knife is ideal for cutting bread and sandwiches without crushing them. It is also used to cut cakes into horizontal layers.
