“Exchanging specialty products” has recently become popular in mainland China. This trend of netizens sending gifts of the same amount to each other has given birth to a unique local product purchasing agent chain, but there have also been many tragic incidents of being cheated by netizens. Recently, a netizen spent RMB 380 (regarding NT$1,659) to send another netizen’s hometown local products, but received 3.99 yuan (regarding NT$17.42) of spicy sticks, which made him want to cry.

According to comprehensive land media reports, Zhang Yi (pseudonym), a woman from Sichuan, received a private message from Shaanxi netizen Zhao Ge (pseudonym) in the middle of this month, expressing that she wanted to exchange special products with a price between 300 and 400 yuan, even though she had tasted some of them when she was traveling in Xi’an. The willingness to exchange local delicacies is not high, but they still agree to exchange local products.

Unexpectedly, a few days following Zhang Yi sent 380 yuan of local products from Chengdu to Jingyang, the sincere and friendly Zhao Ge, who originally introduced the special products of Shaanxi in detail in private messages, refused to send the local products and even blocked her. Before Zhang Yi met Zhao Ge, he had seen people being scammed by sending native products in the short video, and immediately realized that something was wrong. Afterwards, it was found that a total of 7 people were scammed by Zhao Ge.

Zhang Yi revealed that seven people sent a total of more than 3,000 yuan (regarding NT$10,398) worth of local products to Zhao Ge, but some of them either received 3.99 yuan of spicy strips or rolled noodles, or like her, they didn’t even get the local products. In this regard, the police stated that if the public reported the case and constituted a fraud, they would launch a cross-regional investigation. Another lawyer pointed out that although the exchange of special products is a personal act, if the amount is large or food safety problems occur, it may be involved in a criminal offense.

In addition, although similar deceptions have happened to other netizens, and some people have received “2 packs” of tissues in return, the exchange of local products has also spawned a new industry.
