Tourists who stay in hotels, sleep in shelters or in Airbnb accommodation are exposed to a possible infestation of bed bugs. By borrowing books from the library, going to the cinema and collecting second-hand objects, it is also possible to take them home. These insects like to live confined, in furniture (preferably a bed or sofa), under the label of clothing or in the edge of a book. Hematophagous and nocturnal, bedbugs are parasites of humans: they therefore need to live near them. You should know that, in the family, everyone bites: males, females and young. But it is most often the pregnant females that come out of their hiding place, because they need blood for the maturation of their eggs.

Preventive measures exist, during the holidays and when returning home, in the event of bites (aligned or in a triangle, and on areas of the body uncovered during sleep). Once you arrive at the resort, if there is any doubt, you should inspect the rest areas (mattresses and sofas), looking for small black spots, which correspond to the digested blood of bedbugs. It is also possible to leave your luggage in the bathroom.

Above all, if bites appear during the stay, you must make sure not to bring any back in your suitcases. When you get home, open them in the bathtub or in the bathroom. Wash all laundry (even clean ones) at 60°C. When possible, put things in the freezer for seventy-two hours, clean the luggage (inspect the seams with a lamp, before brushing them with soapy water) or spray them with insecticide inside and close them immediately. The best solution, but also the most expensive: use a steam cleaning device and pass it on all the surfaces of the suitcase.

Many poisonings

In case of limited infestation of your bed or your room, promote mechanical elimination by vacuuming (clean the hose and throw away the vacuum bag followingwards) or the steamer on all surfaces. Beware of using commercial insecticides, which can cause bedbugs to migrate to other rooms and make the problem worse. The chemical method can be dangerous, as it is the cause of many poisonings in France. Poison control centers are recording more and more cases. Some of the products marketed on the Internet and reserved for professionals contain powerful molecules, sometimes prohibited in France. The National Agency for Food, Environmental and Occupational Health Safety (ANSES) has identified more than a thousand cases of poisoning, sometimes serious, between 2007 and 2021. It specifies that “their number has increased every year since 2010, and even more since 2016”.
