It is invisible to the naked eye but if it stings you, you will clearly feel it through frantic itching. This little creature is called the chigger and is rather aptly named since it spreads widely during the summer, and the month of August in particular.
These small insects have a fairly complex life cycle because their larval period, when they are red and very active, is in the heart of summer. And at that time, the chigger is only looking for one thing: to feed on your blood.

And it must be said that the little beast is not very observant because it is attracted to any blood, whether cat, dog, rodent, bird or human.
If you come home in the evening following a day spent outdoors and you feel intensely itchy, it means you have served the chigger a treat.
What to do with the chigger?
The pimples are blistered and the itching can last from 2 to 7 days! Thus, it is clearly recommended to avoid lawns, shady lawns, orchards and wetlands, that is to say almost everywhere.
But the chigger does not only walk outside and this is where you have to be even more vigilant since it can invite itself inside your house. Indeed, your pet can be, despite himself, carrier of these little critters in your home.

To protect yourself from the presence of this insect inside your home, there are several precautions such as mowing your lawn close to the ground on a regular basis. It is also necessary to cover the body with long and covering clothes to limit the direct exposure of the skin with them.
If you have been a victim of their bite, a warm bath and mild soap can help get rid of the parasitic larvae. For severe itching, an antihistamine soothing cream can relieve symptoms. Finally, in the case of severe allergic reactions, it is absolutely necessary to consult a doctor.
Each female can lay up to 400 eggs and it is the larvae that have this harmful effect, while in adulthood, the chigger feeds only on vegetable liquids and small insects.
