Do our mobile devices still require raw power? For Qualcomm, the answer appears to be “not necessarily.” The American tech giant, which produces chips for a significant portion of the mobile market, is preparing to launch a new high-end product that prioritizes artificial intelligence features over benchmark performance numbers.

This is suggested by a document published by SmartPrix, which outlines the technical characteristics of the next Snapdragon 8 Gen 4, the chip expected to power most ultra high-end smartphones in 2024 and 2025, including the Galaxy S25. According to a presentation slide leaked from Qualcomm, the next Snapdragon will be available in a “standard” version tagged as SM8750 and a more powerful version named SM8750P (for “Performance”).

AI at the forefront

The next generation of processors is expected to be produced using a 3nm process (by TSMC) and will provide a performance boost of 30-35% over the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. Although this is less than some earlier rumors suggested, it appears that Qualcomm is prioritizing the performance of its AI systems.

Both chips will reportedly include a dedicated module for “low-power” processing of AI-related tasks. This capability could enable continuous processing of audio or video signals received by the phone, while more demanding AI functionalities will be handled by a state-of-the-art neural chip.

6 + 2 cores

Alongside this AI focus, the 8 Gen 4 is expected to feature a big.LITTLE architecture with 6 efficient cores clocked at 2.8 GHz and 2 “performance” cores reaching up to 4 GHz. For graphics, it is anticipated that an Adreno 830 will manage gaming and other resource-intensive mobile tasks. Additionally, 5G, Wi-Fi 7, and the latest Bluetooth technology will also be included.
