how surgeons saved Hedi’s life by removing part of his skull

The 22-year-old had part of his skull removed following suffering severe head trauma. An operation that saved his life.

His testimony has upset social networks and the political world. Hedi, 22, seriously injured during the riots in Marseille on the night of July 1 to 2, gave an interview to the Konbini News media in which he claims to have been beaten up and left for dead by police.

In this case, four police officers were indicted for violence in a meeting by a person holding public authority with the use or threat of a weapon resulting in an ITT (total incapacity for work) of more than eight days. One of them was therefore remanded in custody.

On the video interview, Hedi speaks distinctly and gives his version of the facts, a part of the skull less. “I had a head trauma from a flashball shot,” says the young man.

He then explains that he spent almost 24 hours in a coma, a week in intensive care and two in neurosurgery. In this department of a Marseille hospital, he says he underwent three operations. And to add: “They had to remove a piece of my skull so that it might breathe, in quotes.”

“To make room”

This operation is called decompressive craniectomy, ie removing part of the bone from the skull. “In the event of a head trauma, when the brain tissue is damaged, you can have a lot of edema. As the cranial box does not have the possibility of extending, it is necessary, so that the rest of the brain is not threatened by this edema, to make room”, explained on BFMTV Julien Cavanagh, neurologist at “Massachusetts General Hospital”.

For his part, Laurent Thines, neurosurgeon at the Besançon University Hospital, insisted on our antenna on the importance of head trauma caused by a LBD shot. “When you take an LBD shot in the skull, you have roughly 200 joules, that is to say the energy force of a cinder block falling from a height of one meter,” he said. explain.

When the edema has diminished, Hedi may be able to have his skull reconstructed. “There are several techniques to reconstruct the cranial box but it takes several weeks, if not several months. Six weeks minimum, that is to say that it is necessary that the brain tissue which has all this edema , which is very swollen, is reduced, repairs itself so that the brain tissue can be contained in the cranial box”, developed Julien Cavanagh.

Aesthetic and safe reconstruction

There are then two solutions: put back the part of the skull if it has not been damaged or place a titanium prosthesis. According to the neurologist at Massachusetts General Hospital, reconstruction is “effectively the objective for aesthetic reasons but also for safety”.

He elaborated: “You have to understand that on the part where the bone is missing, the brain tissue is under the skin. That’s why he walks around with a helmet.”

For the specialist, “it is absolutely remarkable to see that he is able to express himself like that” less than a month following his hospitalization. He was therefore rather confident regarding the evolution of his state of health. “At 22, the human brain sometimes has extraordinary abilities. I would say there are some reasons for optimism.”
