More than three quarters of the total world trade volume of goods are transported by sea today. The quantities involved are increasing rapidly – traffic on the seas is becoming ever heavier. As a result, the emissions generated by shipping are also increasing. Today it causes around three percent of global greenhouse gases. By 2030, emissions might increase by more than 15 percent compared to 2008 levels. Alternatives to the cheap but dirty heavy fuel oil that continues to be widely used are still in their infancy.
