Among so many iconic elements of Star Warswithout a doubt the most representative is that of the lightsaber, the weapon used by both heroic Jedi and evil Sith. So much so that there are some particular cases that are recognizable, such as the sable doble by Darth Maul in the phantom menace or the saber with a handle similar to the typical swords of Kylo Ren.
But the most striking example of the distinctive lightsabers is that of Samuel L. Jacksonin his role as Mace Windu. The actor put himself in the shoes of the member of the Jedi Council for the three films that served to finish telling the story that had started in the 70s. This character was one of the main opponents of the formation of Anakin Skywalker as a Jedi, something that would end up playing against him in the third installment, when he dies due to Anakin’s betrayal, at the hands of the evil Senator Palpatine, or Darth Sidious, mentor of the young Jedi’s dark side.
Jackson was already a renowned actor at the end of the 90s, having been part of films such as Pulp Fiction, Hard Eight o Jurassic Park. He himself expressed interest in being a part of Star Wars, which led casting director Robin Gurland to offer to play Windu. This sort of special treatment had a distinctive effect on the character himself.
As fans must remember, Mace Windu had a purple saber, something that made him stand out from all his fellow Jedi. The reason? It’s just that Jackson wanted to be able to find himself easily in big battles, since he was very excited about being a Jedi. In this way, he would differentiate himself from the rest: Samuel only had to ask George Lucas, who quickly said yes.
In a funny video, the actor is shown shyly asking the director about the color of the sabers. With a simple answer that the good guys use green and blue, while the bad guys wear red, Samuel raises the question if there were no purples. And there George says: “you could have a purple one”.
A wise choice for Lucas, who demonstrated his ability to lead large casts and his ability to adapt, great attributes that have led him to lead one of the most successful fantastic worlds in film history. With this simple gesture, he transformed Mace Windu’s saber into something totally unique and striking.
