How Philippe Martinez, leader of the CGT and employee at Renault, refuses to retire at 62

According to information from BFMTV, Renault has offered Philippe Martinez to participate in a voluntary departure plan, the boss of the CGT having soon reached retirement age.

Leader of the CGT since 2015, Philippe Martinez has spent his entire career at Renault. But is the large automobile group pushing him into retirement? Aged 61, the figure of the fight once morest the government project will blow out his 62 candles on April 1. According to information from BFMTV, he refused to leave his company, which offered him a conventional break as part of the group’s recovery.

Philippe Martinez began his career at Renault in 1982 as a metallurgy technician at the Boulogne Billancourt factories, before joining the CGT in 1984. He then evolved within the company until being seconded from it in 2015 when he became General Secretary of his union.

“You’d be better off outside…”

He intends to hand over at the head of the CGT in March 2023 to Marie Buisson, number one in the Education Federation, at the next union convention. But until then, will he remain employed at Renault?

According to our information, all Renault employees, including Philippe Martinez, received a letter in 2022 to present them with several voluntary departure schemes. A contractual termination was notably proposed as part of the group’s recovery.

An offer not seized by the leader of the CGT who still projects himself at Renault at least until the end of the year, when he will have acquired a full pension. And maybe even beyond. On the BFMTV set in January 2023, Philippe Martinez himself denounced Renault’s methods.

“In my company, every year there are dozens of employees over the age of 57-58, of which I am one (…) to whom we say: ‘You would be better off outside…'”, explained the union leader.

“What does this have as a consequence: with what is it financed, these departures? Let’s check that it is not public money I have no proof but it is worth checking”, he advanced.
