Context

Two years ago, Reddit user sweetmullet, a developer with a sought-after niche specialty, detailed how he combines five jobs in IT and earns $1.2 million a year. The post became viral, and the phenomenon of overemployment (aka multiple jobs) began to be talked about from every iron.

In the US market, employment in two or more remote jobs is practiced not only by programmers. For example, a 26-year-old account manager at the same time works salesperson in a retail chain. Being employed in the aggregate 40 hours a week, the guy earns about $ 200 thousand. According to him, the tasks at the second job can be performed in parallel with the regular position without prejudice to both companies.

According to Resume Builder, 69% of remote workers have a second job, and 37% are full-time positions. 75% of “multi-machine workers”, in addition to being overemployed, are also developing their own business.

Study

We are in Finder.vc conducted their own study of the phenomenon of overemployment, a sample of 350 remote workers from Russia.

16% of our respondents have two full-time jobs, 2% have three. Of all overemployed, 67% are representatives of IT professions, the rest are copywriters, marketers, personal assistants, content managers. 13% develop their business in parallel.

According to the respondents, the presence of several employers allows you to diversify your work — the way smart investors reduce risks by throwing money into different baskets. There is only one motivation – to earn more and secure financial freedom. High work speed and time management help to cope with a heavy load. At the same time, 32% experienced burnout due to overtime.

Overbusy telecommuters manage to balance between calls: leaving unimportant calls before they are completed and simultaneously doing tasks if the meeting does not require full involvement. Some of them say that if done right, being overworked doesn’t mean overworking.

And now – the most striking examples from our study.

An iOS developer was able to get a remote job at three Russian IT companies. In one of them, it is issued under an employment contract, in the other two – under a service agreement with an individual entrepreneur. The total monthly income is 950 thousand rubles, including bonuses. Sometimes he has to attend two calls at the same time. Food and cleaning are outsourced, the only time left is to sleep. There has been no vacation for a year and a half, there is a specific goal – to retire at 35.

The next example: a senior under an employment contract, in addition, working as a middle in IP. He is not afraid of dismissal in case of failure of deadlines – if the management of one of the companies is dissatisfied with his work, there is always an alternate airfield. So far, this situation has never arisen in two years. According to the respondent, the companies with which he cooperates are ready to pay above the market for specialists with strong skills and relevant experience.

What about the risks?

Overemployment is also fraught with negative consequences. Almost a quarter of employees of companies in Russia are in a state of burnout. And in the case of overemployment, the situation is aggravated by a sharp change in context, an increase in the number of tasks and the speed of their execution. As a result – a breakdown, the likelihood of depression and health problems.

The other side of the phenomenon is ethical. It is unlikely that an employer will be happy when an employee is not 100% involved in the work process and is under constant stress from deadlines on the side. Much will depend on the culture of the company and the attitude of the management. An example here is history of a UX designerwho worked at two full-time remote positions. One of the companies found out about this, but reacted with understanding and did not fire a valuable employee.

In any case, overbusy remoters should always be aware of the risks and be mentally prepared to receive a message similar to this:
