Frankfurt Federal Building Minister Klara Geywitz from the SPD has a clear goal. “We need an alliance for affordable housing in Germany,” announced the new minister recently. The coalition agreement of the new federal government stipulates that 400,000 apartments should be built in Germany in the future.

But in the past few months, the costs of building new properties have exploded: the prices for wood, steel and, last but not least, building land have doubled in some cases, and further price increases are expected for the coming year. In addition, there is the expected shortage of skilled workers.

The dilemma might pave the way for new ideas. With modern technologies and digital approaches, founders and start-ups have set out to shake up the traditional construction industry and make housing construction cheaper and ultimately sustainable.
