A reader did not send this interesting data and we want to share it.

He gave us data on how much he spends annually on maintenance for a Tesla vehicle compared to a Land Rover. Expenses are in dollars.

My Tesla in the last 12 months (11,000 miles driven):

Fuel: $0 (solar charge at work)
Payments: $0 (full ownership)
Maintenance: $3 (wash fluid)
Tires: $0
Brakes: $0
Insurance: $882
Total: $885 dollars ($0.11 per mile)

My Land Rover in the last 12 months (7,000 miles driven):

Combustible: $ 1727
Payments: $0 (full ownership)
Maintenance: $1235 (fluids, filters, belts, water pump, all DIY)
Tires: $545
Brakes: $370 (DIY)
Insurance: $882
Total: $4,759 dollars ($0.68 per mile)

Summary

The Land Rover costs 6 times as much to run for 12 months, despite doing all the work myself. If he had used staff to do the maintenance, the true cost would have been almost $10,000 for the year for the Land Rover.

This was an unusually heavy year for the Land Rover, as it came up for transmission and differential service, plus a water pump failure that damaged the serpentine belts. However, none of those things will happen in a Tesla. Yes, in a Land Rover.
