Maxi compensation of over 4.2 million euros in favor of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers. This was established by the Court of Auditors of Catanzaro, with the sentence issued last October 10th against 40 individuals, including former administrators of Calabrian local authorities and cooperative companies and associations based in the provinces of Cosenza, Catanzaro, Crotone and Reggio Calabria.
Among these, also the then mayor of Riace Mimmo Lucano, re-elected in June 2024 at the helm of the village symbol of hospitality and currently a European parliamentarian, the former pro tempore manager of the Civil Protection sector of the Calabria Region Salvatore Mazzeo, as well as administrators of the Municipalities of Caulonia and Acquaformosa. The accusation was of irregularities in the assignments for the management of migrant reception centers in the Calabria region, as part of the so-called ‘North Africa emergency’ between April 2011 and December 2012.
The investigations – coordinated by the general prosecutor of the Court of Courts of Catanzaro, Romeo Ermenegildo Palma and directed by the deputy prosecutor, Giovanni Di Pietro, and conducted by soldiers from the Guardia di Finanza of the Compagnia Paola and the Tenenza of Amantea – started in March 2017 and had highlighted serious irregularities which led to an unjustified enrichment of the beneficiaries of public resources. In detail, Lucano will have to compensate the Presidency of the Council of Ministers, together with other figures involved in the affair, the sum of 531,327.65 euros.
