The day of the 2023 Chicago Marathon was marked by a historic feat by Kelvin Kiptum, the 23-year-old Kenyan, who shattered the world record by covering the distance in 2 hours, 35 minutes and 35 seconds. Kiptum’s time erased the previous mark of 2 hours, 1 minute and 9 seconds, held by marathon legend Eliud Kipchoge, also Kenyan, set at the 2022 Berlin Marathon.

“I wasn’t necessarily ready for that, but a world record, I’m so happy! I knew I would break this record one day”, Kiptum said after the race. Reigning Chicago Marathon champion Benson Kipruto of Kenya finished second in 2 hours, 4 minutes and 2 seconds, followed by Belgian athlete Bashir Abdi, third in 2 hours, 4 minutes and 32 seconds.

The victory bonus in Chicago and a bonus for the record

Kiptum walks away with the Chicago Marathon first place prize, worth $100,000 (€94,700), and he will also receive a bonus of $50,000 (€47,300) for setting the course record (and the world). The total prize money for the Chicago event, amounting to $560,000 (€530,000), is split equally between men and women.

A performance that benefits the equipment manufacturer Nike

Kelvin Kiptum is also an athlete associated with the Nike brand with whom it is likely that a record bonus will be contracted. He ran this Sunday with a prototype of the Nike Alphafly 3 shoes, a version that should be available to the general public sometime in 2024.
