How Marrakech copes with water stress

The city of Marrakech is exposed to water stress. To deal with it, several actions are carried out to ensure the continuity of drinking water supply thanks to the Autonomous water and electricity distribution company of Marrakech (RADEEMA), the Tensift hydraulic basin agency ( ABHT) and the National Office for Electricity and Drinking Water (ONEE-Branche Eau). The Régie and the Office have in particular made significant investments to secure the supply of Marrakech from the Al Massira dam. The city is also counting on the use of non-conventional resources (treated waste water) from the WWTP for irrigating the green spaces of Marrakech. After the golf courses and the palm grove, some 26 green spaces and gardens in the city with a total area of 228 ha are now the subject of an irrigation project using wastewater from the STEP. This project requires an investment of 64.7 million DH co-financed by the General Directorate of Local Authorities (DGCT), the National Shared Sanitation Plan (PNAM) and the Municipality of Marrakech. Under construction, it will enter service in early 2023.

Among the actions, there is also the design of a terminal by RADEEMA to encourage the use of treated wastewater on demand. This action primarily targets cleaning companies, works… In the field, actions are carried out for better management of the resource (awareness, rationalization, leak detection program). Finally, the ABHT leads audits of the water efficiency of large consumers of drinking water (administrations, schools, hospitals, hotels, mosques, etc.), a project funded by the Marrakech-Safi region.
