How many Romanians work for the state.  Data from the Ministry of Finance

The number of positions held in public institutions and authorities in Romania was, in December 2023, 1,292,559, with 13,564 more compared to January 2023, 64% of which were in the central public administration, according to data published on the website of the Ministry of Finance ( MF), consulted by Agerpres.

Out of the total of 827,393 employees in the central public administration, 608,152 worked in institutions fully financed from the state budget (plus 5,745 employees compared to January 2023).

The largest number of occupied positions was recorded in the Ministry of Education, respectively 302,040 (294,930 in January 2022), the Ministry of Internal Affairs – 123,808 (125,548 at the beginning of last year), the Ministry of National Defense – 72,658 (73,387 in January 2023), the Ministry of Finance – 24,879 (24,779 in January 2023) and the Ministry of Health -18,295 (18,236 in January 2023).

According to the quoted source, 9,279 positions were filled in the institutions fully financed from the social insurance budget (plus 1,054 compared to January 2023), in those subsidized from the state budget and from the unemployment insurance budget a number of 43,886 (plus 255), while that in the institutions fully financed from own revenues there were 166,076 occupied positions (plus 2,614).

At the same time, in December 2023, 465,166 people worked in the local public administration (plus 3,896), of which 285,065 in institutions fully financed from local budgets (plus 4,010) and 180,101 in institutions fully or partially financed from own revenues (minus 114).
