The Banco de la República has the exclusive constitutional function of issuing Colombian legal currency, in order to satisfy the demand for banknotes and coins throughout the country.
According to the issuer, 1.192 billion banknotes of different denominations have been printed this year. And last year, a total of 1.990 billion units were printed, 25.7% more than in 2022, when 1.582 billion banknotes were produced.
This means that the Issuer produces around 5.45 million banknotes daily, on average.
The most commonly printed bills are those of 50 thousand, 2 thousand and 100 thousand pesos.
However, since 2022, the 50 thousand pesos denominations have not been produced, because there has been no evidence of deterioration of those in circulation.
This year, 263.7 million 50 thousand peso bills were printed.
This year, the most produced bill is the 2,000 pesos bill, with a total of 177.81 million units.
The 100 thousand pesos bills follow with 117.88 million units; the 20 thousand pesos bills with 103.15 million units.
The 10,000 pesos bills ended with 89.27 million units and the 5,000 pesos bills with 74.77 million units.
For cash circulation, an average of 4.5 billion pesos leave the cash center per month to be delivered to private banks and to the treasuries of the Issuer at the national level.
