How low vitamin D levels increase the risk of long-term COVID: new study findings

With its deficiency, the risk of developing post-covid syndrome is high.

Scientists at Vita-Salute San Raffaele University have found that the risk of developing post-COVID syndrome (long-term covid) increases when vitamin D levels are low. The findings suggest that people should have their vitamin D levels checked following COVID-19.

The results of the study are published in The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism.

Also known as post-COVID syndrome, long-term COVID is a condition in which the effects of COVID-19 persist for more than 12 weeks following infection. Studies have shown that it affects 50-70% of patients hospitalized with COVID-19, but very little is known regarding this disease.

In the new study, researchers examined 100 patients aged 51-70 with and without long-term COVID. They measured vitamin D levels at the first hospitalization for COVID-19 and six months following discharge.

Researchers found lower levels of vitamin D in patients with long-term COVID compared to those without it. Vitamin D levels were especially low in patients who complained of “brain fog”: confusion, forgetfulness, and poor concentration.

“Our study shows that COVID-19 patients with low vitamin D levels are more likely to develop long-term COVID, but it is not yet known whether vitamin D supplements can improve symptoms or even reduce this risk,” the researchers said.
