At the beginning of 1946, the teacher and Holocaust survivor Mejlech Bakalczuk founded a historical commission in a camp for Jewish displaced persons (DP camp) in the Bindermichl district of Linz to collect testimonies from Holocaust survivors. Bakalczuk led the commission together with the Butschatsch-born architect and survivor Simon Wiesenthal, who had already supported the American occupying forces in their search for concentration camp personnel.
