The production of gas dand the Neuquén deposits in Vaca Muerta increased steadily since November last year and the latest data shows good signs regarding the increase in demand due to the low winter temperatures. Look at the ranking of the main areas of the segment of the shale gas.

During March (latest official data) the oil companies in the formation averaged extractions of 52.4 million cubic meters per day (MMm3/d)exclusive to shale gas. In year-on-year terms that level represented an increase of 14.3%. Compared to what was registered in November of last year, the increase reached 13.7%.

52,4
million cubic meters of gas per day was the production of shale gas in March.

This is how they emerge from the latest official reports from the National Energy Secretariat and the Neuquén Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources.

The most representative data is the year-on-year increase because shows a better position in terms of gas production in a key period for winter demand. In other words, this means that the ramp up production this year will be less demanding than last year.

Gas production in Vaca Muerta during March

A key that reflects the performance of the shale gas in Vaca Muerta is that the top five of the main blocks are operated by several companies: Tecpetrol, TotalEnergies, PAE, YPF and Pluspetrol. For the elaboration of the following ranking, data processed by the consultancy Economía & Energía were used.

Something that is already a constant in the segment is that The oil company of the Techint group, Tecpetrol, operates the area with the highest production of shale gas -by far- from the formation. This is Fortín de Piedra, which in March registered extractions of 13.4 MMm3/d.

French TotalEnergies operates the second block which contributes the largest volumes from the formation and is Watershed Pichana West. In March, it averaged extractions of 6.8 MMm3/d.

Close behind was the neighboring area, Aguada Pichana Oeste, operated by the Bulgheroni family company, Pan American Energand. Official data shows that some 6.5 MMm3/d were extracted.

In fourth and fifth place were the blocks YPF’s Rincón del Mangrullo and Pluspetrol’s La Calera. In March they averaged extractions of 4.9 MMm3/d and 4.6 MMm3/d, respectively.

The data shows that the five main blocks of the formation covered a total production of 36.2 MMm3/d, which means almost 70% of the 52.4 MMm3/d in March.
