In an economic context marked by inflation, French telephone operators have mainly opted to increase the prices of their packages in 2023. Orange, Bouygues Telecom and SFR have thus revised upwards the prices of almost all of their offers. Paradoxically, the operator Free has chosen a different path, opting to maintain its prices despite inflationary pressure. This decision paid off, as evidenced by the financial results published on November 14, 2023.

A winning strategy for Free

Free’s choice not to increase its prices has clearly paid off. The operator revealed an exceptional commercial performance for the third quarter, recording a net increase of 324,000 subscribers. This figure breaks down into 274,000 new net mobile subscribers, including 297,000 4G/5G subscribers, and 50,000 net new high and very high speed subscribers. Free particularly shone in the fiber segment, with 200,000 new subscribers, consolidating its leading position in terms of recruiting new customers.

This trend is all the more remarkable as Free outperformed the combined performance of its competitors Bouygues Telecom and Orange on the mobile market, the latter having attracted 108,000 and 83,000 new customers respectively for their mobile plans. These results underline the effectiveness of Free’s strategy, which seems to have found the winning formula by resisting the temptation to increase its prices in a difficult economic environment.

A more competitive fixed-line market

In the fixed line market, competition remains intense. Although Free achieved a notable performance with 50,000 new Freebox subscribers, the operator ranks second behind Bouygues Telecom, which managed to attract 81,000 new customers during the same quarter. Orange, on the other hand, experienced a decline with the loss of 31,000 customers. In the specific fiber segment, Free maintains its second position, just behind Orange which recorded 259,000 new subscribers.
