How does NASA handle death in space? Protocols and procedures revealed

Houston: NASA has given instructions on what to do with the dead body of a passenger in space. The protocol was released in preparation for America’s lunar and Mars explorations. NASA has made sure that astronauts selected for space missions are as healthy as possible. Meanwhile, the body also determines what to do if someone dies in space during a mission.

If someone dies during a low-Earth-orbit mission, such as on the International Space Station, the crew can return the body to Earth in a capsule within hours. If a death occurs on the moon, astronauts can return home with the body within a few days. NASA has detailed protocols in place to deal with such incidents. Preservation of the dead body may not be a major concern for a quick return to Earth. But the first priority is to get the remaining passengers safely to Earth.

Things would be different if you died during the 300 million mile journey to Mars. In that case, the crew cannot return. Instead, only at the end of the mission will the body reach Earth with the crew. In the meantime, staff will store the body in a separate chamber or a separate body bag. A constant temperature and humidity inside the spacecraft will help preserve the corpse.
20 people have died since human space exploration began.

Fourteen people died in NASA space shuttle disasters in 1986 and 2003, three astronauts died in the 1971 Soyuz 11 mission, and three astronauts died in the 1967 Apollo 1 launch pad fire. NASA plans to send humans to the Moon in 2025 and Mars in the next ten years. Commercial space travel also took off.
