Apple recently launched a brand new feature that lets you turn your iPhone, iPad, or Apple TV into a karaoke machine. The new feature is called Apple Music Sing, and it’s available now.
Simply update your device to the latest software by going to Settings > General > Software Update.
And longtime Apple Music users know that the service already offers rolling lyrics for songs so you can sing along — but now it’s even better.
Apple’s new feature
Apple Music Sing greatly improves this feature to let you do some proper vocals.
There are two main parts to the app feature; Adjustable vocals and lyrics in real time, and songs now have a vocals slider that you can use to quieten or even semi-silence the vocals in a song.
This uses powerful on-device processing to analyze the waveform of the song and isolate the vocals. You can control this by simply tapping the microphone on a vocal-approved song. The other element of the feature is real-time lyrics.
Instead of displaying the lyrics line by line, Singing Tracks will highlight the lyrics by syllable, which should help you sing along even if you’re not familiar with the song.
If the song contains background vocals, it will be displayed in a smaller font between the main lines.
For a duet track, the song will split the lyrics to the left and right of the screen, depending on who is singing, and Apple says the new feature will be available later this month.
“The Apple Music lyrics experience is constantly one of the most popular features of our service,” said Oliver Chaucer, vice president of Apple Music and Beats.
He continued, “We already know that our users around the world love to follow their favorite songs, so we wanted to develop this offer further to enable more sharing around music through singing, and it is really a lot of fun, our customers will love it.”
Apple Music editors will organize dozens of lyric-themed playlists by topic, decade, and genre, and you’ll be able to search directly for lyric songs, too, just by searching for the microphone icon.
