In France, on Sundays, we don’t really read the press. To compare at least with other countries where the Sunday press is very rich and often eagerly awaited. Certainly, most territories are experiencing an erosion of their Sunday press – and of the press in general – but the circulation of certain German or British newspapers is still enough to make the French pale.
“In France, it is the regional newspapers which saturate the offer on Sundays, by being present in bakeries, shops, etc. Whereas in several countries like England or Germany, national newspapers remain references. In certain circles, the Sunday edition even remains the absolute reference,” explains Jean-Clément Texier, banker specializing in the sector. For him, the French press suffered from two specificities: first, the profusion of newsmagazines like “Le Point”, “L’Obs”, “L’Express” which “pulled the rug out from under the feet of newspapers in in-depth analysis and investigation, while this remains the prerogative of Sunday dailies abroad. Then, the fact that the Hersant group launched several supplements (“Le Figaro Magazine” etc.) at the end of the week, “imposing the weekend and not Sunday as the highlight of the supplements, unlike other countries foreigners.”
