Monkeypox is a virus that primarily affects the skin, which causes rashes in different parts of the body, people tend to suffer from inflammation, fever and muscle pain. The rash, which looks like hives, is painful and bothersome. A new variant has emerged from this virus that is affecting the world and has generated an alert in the World Health Organization (WHO), who, in response to the increase in cases, issued an international public health emergency notice.

The alarming thing about the new variant is that it is causing deaths, mainly in minors and adult men. In Colombia, the presence of the virus has been known since 2022 cases reported in reports from the National Institute of Health of Colombia.Between May 2022 and August 2024, 4,257 cases have been reported in Colombia. Of this total, 109 cases have occurred in 2024, 99.1% in men.” According to the same institute, a total of 4,257 cases of smallpox are estimated in the country, and as the figures show, the majority of those affected have been men.
This disease is transmitted through contact with bodily fluids of an infected person, It is usually through direct contactHowever, it can also be transmitted by rubbing or coming into contact with clothing, sheets, towels or other items close to the infected person. Face-to-face contact and sexual relations are also included in the ways the virus spreads.
The duration of the symptoms is not yet exact, as it varies depending on the individual’s body. However, there have been cases in which the symptoms did not appear until 21 days later.

The symptoms, although not all of them need to be present to identify and detect the disease, are the following:
- Swollen lymph nodes.
- Fatigue.
- Headache.
- Sore throat.
- Backache.
- Tos.
- Runny nose.
- Skin rash consisting of different phases during the development of the virus.

The INS confirmed that the most affected cities in Colombia, with a concentration of 84.8% of cases, are Bogotá, Antioquia and Cali. On social media, this entity shared the basic precautions necessary to prevent the large-scale spread of this virus.
