How did we do? The U-20 World Athletics Championships have begun in Peru

The U-20 World Athletics Championships kicked off in Lima, Peru, with the participation of 22 Colombian athletes, 13 women and 9 men.

This is the second largest Colombian roster in this type of competition, which is where the future of Colombian athletics lies.

At the start of the competition and with a time of 10:32.05, her personal best, Laura Valentina Camargo finished in tenth position in Heat 2 in the 3000-meter steeplechase event.

The compatriot claimed first place in the South American rankings at the start of the U-20 World Athletics Championships taking place in Lima, Peru.

During the first day of the competition, several Colombians competed in events such as triple jump, 100-meter dash, hammer throw, among others.

However, the most notable participation was that of Laura Camargo in the 3000-meter steeplechase event.

Although the Colombian finished 17th overall and did not qualify for the final, she improved her record along with taking first place in the South American ranking in the 3000-meter steeplechase.

Ethiopia’s Sembo Almayew led the race with a time of 9:30.59, followed by Kenya’s Diana Chepkemoi with 9:47.97 and Nancy Chepkwurui (Uganda) took third place with a time of 9:49.06.

Laura Camargo said after the competition that “I feel very proud to be able to run with these girls.”

The young Colombian athlete added that “something that clearly makes me very nervous, I was nervous before going out on the track, but as soon as I go out I change my attitude and I focus.”

Additionally, the athlete highlighted that “their marks are better than mine, but that is why we are here; clearly proud of Colombia and representing the country in the best way possible.”

Other Colombian results during the first day of competition were in the hammer throw, Juan Scarpetta, tenth place in group A with 67.16 meters.

In the mixed 4×400 relay, Nahomy Castro, Paola Loboa, Hugo Thyme and José David Mosquera, fifth place in Heat 1.

Additionally, in the 100-meter dash, María Camila Maturana, sixth place in Heat 5; 100-meter dash, Stefanny Julio, seventh place in Group 6; and Triple jump, Santiago Theran, 13th place overall with 15.30.

On Wednesday, the second day of competition, the Colombians who will compete are José David Mosquera, Nahomy Castro, Paola Loboa and Valery Arce.
