With stealthy and orderly work, the Social Christian Party has been gaining a place within the Chilean right, despite its youth, since it was only formed in 2022, in a context of constitutional discussion in which they were a key piece when it came to defending the most conservative ideas.
The group was part of the campaign for the exit plebiscite on September 4, 2022. Its representatives publicly supported the Rejection option with the slogan ‘For the Love of Chile’, and mobilized throughout the country defending their ideas based on the Christian worldview and a social vision focused on the most needy, which connects with the evangelical ethos.
More recently, its deputies walked out of the congress hall where President Gabriel Boric was giving his speech to the nation on June 1. The reason? Their rejection of the president’s announcement that he would send a bill to Congress on legal abortion.
The group is currently led by the deputy from Ñublens, Sara Concha, and has a bench made up of ex-RN members, ex-Republicans and independents, who were recently joined by Senator Rojo Edwards.
Last Sunday, it was the only party that held primaries for mayor in Concepción, together with independents, and although the participation was not massive, they managed to mobilize more than 4 thousand people, resulting in the election with 81.6% of the votes of former councilman Héctor Muñoz Uribe, who will represent the group next October.
This candidacy will undoubtedly have a lot to say in the context of the Biobío right wing, which intends to take over a stronghold that has belonged to the DC for several years, a situation that will surely be replicated in parliament, where the votes of this incipient faction will be worth their weight in gold.
“In Ñuble we have high expectations”
According to the deputy for Ñuble and president of the Social Christian Party, Sara Concha, “the results obtained in the primaries in Concepción, in addition to making us very happy, allow us to project ourselves as a party for the elections that will be held in October of this year, in which we hope to have new candidates elected, that is, new mayors, new councilors, regional councilors. In addition, it allows us to project ourselves as a party in the different regions,” she said.
In the case of the Ñuble Region, he said, “in addition to promoting our candidate for governor, the former regional health minister of Biobío, Erick Jiménez, who we believe can do very well; we have candidates for mayors in Coelemu, Quirihue, Chillán, El Carmen and other communes. We also have complete lists of councilors who will compete on the ballot, and who will obviously allow us to provide authorities who have the quality of a person, and who can also serve the community with a vocation, which is what is needed in politics today.”
According to Concha, “authorities are needed who are not only focused behind a desk, but who are also on the ground, and that is what we have been working on with our candidates. We hope that this will also be reflected in the October results,” she said.
In summary, the legislator said, “we project having more elected people from the party, and that they also contribute to regional and national work.”
