Game News How Diablo 4 taught me to take my time

Available since June 6 for everyone, Diablo 4 opened my eyes. Forced to tinker with my characters myself, I discovered a whole new way to appreciate the personalization of my hero in a role-playing game. Customization and a way to play that takes the time it takes.

Personal opinion

The following article is an opinion piece. This means that it represents the author’s point of view. Therefore, it is not representative of the rest of JV’s editorial staff.

I don’t know Diablo, what are we talking regarding?

Diablo 4 is available since June 02 in early access. This fourth numbered part is, in my opinion, an excellent way to (re)connect with a license that has revolutionized the world of video games and the way of doing role-playing games. It takes up the visual and sound atmosphere of Diablo II, assuming its side dark-fantasy which fits much better with the story he wants to tell: an endless conflict between angels and demons taking place in Sanctuary, where humanity lives.

The Diablo 4 talent tree.

However, this is not the only thing it takes from Diablo II. Highly requested by players, the talent tree of the second installment is back. By killing monsters, the player recovers experience. This experience allows him to level up and leveling up allows him to recover skill points. In turn, these skill points are invested in the talent tree. It is made up of 7 structural points, each targeting a particular type of skill. The first is for the basic attack, the second for the main skill and so on. There are approximately six branches per point, allowing for variety in character building: it is up to each person’s sensitivity to decide whether or not it is sufficient or not for their playing pleasure.

Nevertheless, this great customization highlights two camps. There are those who want to play efficiently and perform as quickly as possible. They can be placed in the same group as those who are reluctant to invest themselves personally in this talent tree because they believe that whatever they choose, it will not be effective. This part of players therefore tends to recover builds (set of equipment and talents to designate an archetype for a character. Example: the Fire mage) all made on the Internet. As you will have understood, we find on the other side those who might be called the creatives: they don’t shy away from the task when climbing the tree. I myself went from one camp to another and I will try to explain, without pointing the finger at the performers, why this is a behavior that we must try to adopt.

Why was it so satisfying?

They will very quickly say to me:Yes but then you, it’s not the same since you played the game before everyone else“. And yes, very clearly, I had no choice! There’s a start to everything for once: regular player of World of Warcraft, Hearthstone and several online role-playing games, I’ve often watched the best builds on line. And there are several arguments for that. It serves as an excuse for us not to be more efficient insofar as we have done everything well. Moreover, no need to justify yourself in group activities on your performance if you have the fashionable build. Then good, “laziness“also to spend time: it’s clearly a time saver that some players can’t do without.

But there, no laziness: I had to build my character myself. For several tens of minutes, I somehow tinkered with my talent tree as the levels progressed. Then came the first wall. The first boss that made me realize that, as things stand, it wasn’t going to be possible to defeat him. Not for a question of level, but that it was too tedious with my customization of current talents.

This kind of boss asks you to think twice if you want to kill him

So no choice: my build Explosion of corpses had to give way. After a few seconds of thinking regarding the nature of the abilities to choose from, here we go: blank page, back to square one. A new me arrives with a build focused around bone magic. The task was not easy: it was necessary to choose between such or such talent in such a place and to compose with ergonomics not at the rendezvous. One of the few black spots in Diablo IV. Efforts needed to finally defeat this boss. There is therefore necessarily satisfaction: I managed to overcome this obstacle by myself, by thinking regarding the configuration of the encounter, the enemy attacks, etc.

So there is a certain self-confidence that sets in. Icing on the cake, the game pushes me to be creative once more: my build quickly becomes obsolete when I have to face waves of monsters. Rebelote therefore with the tree of talents with which I always take more pleasure each time I invest myself in it. In my test, I even mention several times wanting to get back into the game despite my big forty hours already invested: it’s to try, in my own way, every possible build of every class. It was an ocean of possibilities, and that’s not counting the colossal content related to exploration, which had opened up before me and which I was keen to discover. A desire for customization that Diablo 4 brought me and that I want to export to all games that are even a little permissive.

Diablo 4 card.

His own way of playing and that’s it

So be careful, I’m not saying that my way of playing is the best. Having been on both sides, I completely understand why players don’t invest in talent trees, deck building, or customization in general.

This is especially true in a game like Diablo where performance is often at the heart of gameplay. There were the seasonal classifications by class for Diablo 3 which brought the challenge. Regarding Diablo 4, there is no doubt that a hierarchy should probably settle over the seasons with the level of the Nightmare dungeons. I fully understand that some beyond the pleasure of customization, seek the pleasure of challenge and performance. But I remain convinced that by investing oneself in a build that we have created ourselves, we will always be more efficient than with something copied from the Internet. We will have invested ourselves, read each keyword, description of equipment… Enough to know what we are playing with increased pleasure to have found his thing alone.

In any case, these two ways of playing bring a certain satisfaction or even an additional reason to play. In any case, thanks to Diablo 4, I finally managed to find my true path, my true way of playing and that despite its appearance as a game intended for a fringe of competitive players, it is perfectly suited to players who want also take the time. I would even tend to say that he is appreciated all the more if you take the time to watch, understand and put things together in your own mind through the personalization of your character. But that, as said just now, is because I found a way that suited my way of playing. A bit like we prefer this or that athlete because we identify more with his style of play. Everyone must find their own and, no matter which one, it will be theirs. And it’s perfect like that.
