With a few physical and technical tweaks, the former Buckeye might wreak havoc
Dawand Jones – Offensive tackle– 21 ans – (RS) Senior– Ohio State
Size : 2m03
Weight : 163 kg
Estimated draft position: 1e tour
NFL Comparison: Orlando Brown Jr. (Bengals)
Dawand Jones is one of the hypes of this off-season. But he wasn’t as scrutinized when he left Ohio State in December as he is today. Jones impressed at the Senior Bowl and also at Indianapolis during the NFL combine. His athletic qualities and a size such as his clearly put the flea in the ears of scouts NFL because if he adapts to the professional level, he might be a real pillar for the attack of his future franchise.
Points forts
– Template
– QI Football
– Power
– Long arms
It is obviously necessary to linger first on the size of the man. 2m03 for 163 kilos, it’s very impressive, even in the NFL where all the templates are oversized. What gives a lot of value to Dawand Jones is that he has a good Football IQ and that he manages to use it well to anticipate the movements of his vis-à-vis despite his size. If he manages to do this, once his opponent is facing him, there is little chance that he will pass because Jones is so powerful that he knocks back a lot of pass rushers. His long arms also help him take control of the duel as few players manage to grab him to deflect him from his path.
Weak points
– Mobility
– Weight
If Jones is quite good at anticipating the movements of defenders, he has a lot more trouble reacting. It happens to be badly positioned and it has difficulty getting back into a better position before being overtaken. It’s true that his long arms have allowed him to save furniture so far, but his lack of mobility in his legs is clearly seen in certain actions. Maybe he should lose some weight to improve his explosiveness? There’s no reason that would degrade his power as he would still be heavier and taller than the majority of NFL players.
Possible destinations
Las Vegas Raiders, New England Patriots, New York Jets, Tennessee Titans
A very important common point between these four franchises: they have absolutely no solution at the right tackle position and are better armed at the left tackle position. Kolton Miller and Riley Reiff are doing the job for the Raiders and Patriots respectively, while the Titans brought in Andre Dillard. The case of the Jets with Mekhi Becton remains very uncertain, but directing Dawand Jones to the position of right tackle to start his career remains a good idea.
