How dangerous is the Suwalki corridor for the Baltics? Major named three points

The question of how dangerous the Suwalki Gap is for the security of the Baltic States is still relevant, writes LA.LV.

There are different opinions on this issue on social networks, including that this stage is the most dangerous from the point of view of the defense of the Baltic States. This question was asked by a viewer of the TV24 program “Currently on military operations in Ukraine” to Major of the National Armed Forces, staff officer of the Zemessardze Janis Slaidins.

He recalled that much has already been said regarding the Suwalki Corridor – yes, the distance from Belarus at this point is indeed only 68 kilometers, but it is narrow. If this narrow section had any additional value in the eyes of the Russians, they should have captured wider territories anyway – at least Vilnius and Kaunas.

In addition, the area is very complex – the main roads, which would be a good corridor for maneuvering, run from south to north, and there is practically no road network from east to west.

Secondly, NATO countries Lithuania and Poland are located next to each other.

“Whoever enters there – how will they provide supplies, large units cannot be stationed there, they will not be able to manage the necessary things, unless it is sabotage. But in order to punch a hole there, we need fairly large mechanized forces capable of moving and maneuvering!” the military man pointed out.

And thirdly, according to Slaidins, is the fact that there are currently no Russian forces in Kaliningrad that might come out to meet the attackers from the Belarusian side; there are no such units capable of attacking, so the Suwalki Corridor can be discarded as a potentially dangerous place.
