how cybercriminals are exploiting the big movie releases of the summer

One of the scam pages discovered lures users with promotional offers for Barbie dolls for the film’s release. In addition to the classic dolls, people online are encouraged to buy limited edition dolls from the film, including a doll featuring lead actress Margot Robbie for around £12, to which they are offered to add a Barbie helicopter for £56 , with an “exclusive” discount bringing the total cost of the basket to £60.

Once the basket is validated, the user is redirected to a purchase form which requests personal identification data including name, address, telephone number and banking information. The less suspicious unknowingly transfer their money and personal data directly to the scammers. In addition to the financial risks, this scam also poses serious privacy concerns, as the stolen data could be sold on the Dark Web.

Nor did the scammers fail to exploit Oppenheimer’s exit, also scheduled for Wednesday, July 19. Their strategy was to trick fans into offering them free viewing of the film, with the intention of stealing their banking information and money. In this kind of scenario, scammers often resort to a tactic of asking for a token sum of a dollar or a euro for registration. However, this seemingly innocuous payment requirement may be a red flag. To register, they require a bank card to be associated, which allows unauthorized and difficult to reverse debits on users’ accounts.

« Previews and popular releases generate a wave of anticipation, but it’s essential that everyone stay alert and follow basic online safety rules. Expectations and excitement should not overshadow the risks. By staying vigilant and adopting safe habits online, we can fully enjoy the Barbie and Oppenheimer outing experience while protecting ourselves from the cyber threats that lurk the digital world. commented Olga Svistunova, security expert at Kaspersky.
