The supporters of the Canadian kept hope, but the abacus of Gary Bettman decided otherwise. Chicago is likely where Connor Bedard will land, where he will delight Blackhawks fans for years to come.

The one already described as the most talented player of his generation was born on July 17, 2005, in North Vancouver. In an interview given last year to TVA Sports, his father Thomas confessed the family’s attachment to its Quebec roots.
“Fifty years before I was born, the Bédard family was settled in Quebec. Since then, our clan has moved to Western Canada. It’s where I was born and where Connor was born. I learned this just a few years ago. »
The story of the Bédards is quite representative of all these families from the French-speaking diaspora who crossed the continent. Their language resisted for a long time, to finally be assimilated following mixed marriages. The absence of linguistic communities capable of transmitting the heritage has also contributed to this.
ISAAC BEDARD
The ancestor Isaac Bédard (1614-1689), originally from La Rochelle, landed in Quebec around 1660. His wife Marie Girard (1623-1688?) and their children would follow a little later. Before embarking for New France, the Bédards had to renounce their Protestantism.
After first settling in the Côte de la Fabrique, where they had neighborhood problems, the family settled in Petite-Auvergne, located south of the Trait Carré in Charlesbourg.
Clever with his hands, Isaac receives from Jean Talon an order for 100 oars. His son Jacques (1644-1711), a farmer and also a talented carpenter in Charlesbourg, built two wings of the general hospital.
His grandson Jacques (1760?-1832) was also skilled with the hammer: he built the rear gallery of the church of Saint-Mathias-du-Richelieu.
The Bédards spent a century on the banks of the Richelieu before moving west in the early 20th century.
Ambroise Bédard (1848-1909) settled in Saint-Pierre-Jolys, a town of 1,000 inhabitants, still predominantly French-speaking, located regarding fifty kilometers south of Winnipeg.

His son Lucien (1883-1946), born in Quebec, was still on a Manitoba farm in 1911. In 1921, he was in Swift Current, Saskatchewan with his eight children. He will die on the other side of the continent, in Vancouver, following having had 14 children.
His eldest son Joseph Désiré (1906-1992), who would pursue a career in the navy, married a German, which led to the assimilation of the descendants.
Désiré’s son, Garth Frederick Bedard, born in a taxi in New Westminster, is the young prodigy’s grandfather. Garth won’t be around next week when his grandson dons the Blackhawks jersey. He tragically died in a car accident two years ago.
