“How Colruyt Supermarkets are Limiting Purchases to Prevent Hoarding and Reselling During Coronavirus Crisis”

In the midst of the Coronavirus crisis, many Belgians have rushed into supermarkets to stock up on toilet paper, flour, sugar or even pasta. The empty shelves, the stores had to impose a purchase limit on their customer. Rebelote in this month of April 2023. Indeed, Colruyt customers are surprised to see a note displayed on the shelves.

“Maximum 10 pieces per customer. Like that, there is enough left for everyone”, can they read the stores of the sign. The reason? Some buyers take advantage of the low prices of certain products to buy large quantities, either to hoard or to resell them.

Nathalie Roisin from Colruyt explains to our colleagues in NB: “We saw buyers and resellers buying large volumes, which meant that the shelves were in danger of emptying. As a result, we limit the number of pieces per customer (…) There are indeed very low prices for many basic products at the moment. And since we always guarantee the lowest prices at Colruyt, these products are the cheapest with us”.

A dozen products from the Boni and Everyday brands are thus concerned, such as sugar, flour, frozen fries and salt.
