How Coffee Raises Some People’s Cholesterol

Can’t get enough of your morning coffee? In Norway, researchers may have found a reason that will push you to limit your consumption. According to new research (source 1) published in the journal Open Heart, the sex of the coffee drinker and the method of brewing may explain the link between coffee and increased cholesterol. Previous studies have found that chemicals in coffee raise cholesterol levels.

While espresso consumption was associated with the largest gender difference in cholesterol levels, French press was associated with the smallest. Through this study, the researchers compared espresso coffee to other methods of preparation in adults aged 40 and over. All participants specified their amount of coffee ranging from no cups to more than six per day. In addition, each gave information on the type of coffee: filter, espresso, instant, pod, etc.

More than a thousand phytochemicals

According to the findings, women drank just under 4 cups of coffee per day compared to 5 for men. According to this study, the consumption of 3 to 5 cups of espresso per day was significantly associated with an increase in cholesterol, especially in men.
