Although five of the ten most watched television series in the country are from Quebec, the general director of the Association of Directors of Quebec (ARRQ), Mylène Cyr, affirms that the situation remains “difficult” for people in the sector.
“We won’t hide it. There are legislative changes that are taking place, but it is very slow,” in an interview Thursday on the set of the show À vosaffaires.
“Revenues are falling and that has an impact on our production,” she continues. We have to stand out internationally, so we have to make our place in an international landscape where people have access to a significant volume.”
Ms. Cyr emphasizes that the Quebec television production environment is “important” for the transmission and perpetuation of the province’s culture.
“It’s really a social phenomenon that defines us,” she notes.
However, she is saddened that Quebec productions are “losing ground, particularly among young audiences.”
So that the next generations of Quebecers continue to watch shows that are produced here, the director of the ARRQ is proposing “different means”.
First of all, Ms. Cyr suggests an avenue that is more legislative.
“We want to ensure that the platforms offer more productions that come from here and that we are able to discover them.”
Another option would be to integrate elements of Quebec television culture into education to try to encourage young people to listen to more content that was produced in Quebec.
A third solution would lie in the use of a new technology, namely virtual sets.
“Obviously, it doesn’t solve all the problems, but let’s say that it’s a technology that might help increase quality. Also, in terms of creativity, it’s quite extraordinary what we can do,” explains Ms. Cyr.
This method might help produce “anything that is science fiction, imaginary settings or even what is more difficult to shoot, like something that might be dangerous,” she specifies.
