Why does fruit go moldy so quickly? Mold thrives where there is water and oxygen.
So the rate at which fruit goes moldy usually depends on the fruit’s water content, when the fruit was picked and how it was stored. For example, berries usually go moldy faster than other fruits because their water content is very high.
More on how to make your fruit last a little longer, says nutritionist Rachel Fine, founder of To The Pointe Nutrition. Here are her tips on the best way to stop various types of fruit from going moldy too quickly.
How to keep berries fresh longer and prevent mold
Berries such as blueberries, strawberries and raspberries are some of the fastest fruits to go moldy. Fortunately, Fine has a solution to delay this process.
“Especially during their season, berries can often spoil quickly during the summer months,” says Fine.
“To combat this, first rinse your berries in their container under cool, running water. “Then rinse the berries once more, this time in a solution of one part white vinegar and four parts water,” he adds.
How to prevent bananas from ripening too quickly
Another common fruit that can spoil very quickly, especially if you buy them in bunches, is bananas. And we often bring bananas home and put them in a fruit bowl, or on a tray on our kitchen counter. But Fine suggests changing where and how you store them:
“Ethylene produced by bananas increases the rate of spoilage. So to combat this, hang the bananas to encourage air flow and prevent ethylene emissions from concentrating in one area,” she says.
