[임자 건강칼럼] AIDS and cold are related to calcium deficiency – Gyeongbuk Newspaper

Diseases caused by viral infections include smallpox, which is said to have already been extinct, Japanese encephalitis and polio hepatitis, and the more familiar influenza cold. In addition, if the brain, spinal cord, liver, respiratory system, etc., which are targets of virus attack, lose their functions, it is a disease in itself. In that respect, AIDS is a disease in which immunodeficiency cells called ‘T-type lymphocytes’ are invaded by viruses. By itself, it does not interfere with the functioning of the body. However, if T-type lymphocytes do not work, there is no power to prevent various infectious diseases such as pneumonia or tuberculosis, and today’s chemotherapy cannot help. AIDS is called ‘Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome’. There is no other disease that shows more clearly how terrifying it is for immunity to sleep. There are two main ways of defending once morest external enemies called immunity. One is called ‘humoral immunity’, in which B lymphocytes make missile-like antibodies and use them to shoot bacteria or viruses. The other is called ‘cellular immunity’, which is in charge of T lymphocytes. Like a tank crashing into an enemy tank, T cells directly collide with and destroy cells such as tuberculosis bacillus, mold, or cancer cells that have invaded from outside. It is not so easy to find the culprits who are prone to infections such as the AIDS virus. But even here, calcium deficiency is deeply involved. Dr. DiGeorge of Temple University in the United States discovered a congenital disease called ‘DiGeorge Syndrome’. This is a disease in which the function of the thymus gland is poor. The ‘thymus’ is located in the front of the chest, just below the sternum, and is where T lymphocytes are made. Curiously, in this disease, the function of the thyroid gland generated next to the thymus is also not good. If the function of the parathyroid gland is poor, the concentration of calcium in the blood is low, and the shape of the nails may change, hair may fall out, or a type of fungus called ‘monilia’ may infect the skin. This shows that the thymus, an organ that produces T cells, and the parathyroid gland, which controls calcium, are not only neighbors, but also have a close relationship in terms of growth and development. When calcium is insufficient, extra calcium from bones melted by parathyroid hormone enters cells, and when T lymphocytes are broken by AIDS virus, calcium goes into them for sure. Needless to say, the direct culprit of AIDS is a virus, but the virus makes it easier for calcium to enter T cells. And when calcium enters the T cell, the T cell dies. Being a person with AIDS means, of course, that there is a chance to be infected with the AIDS virus, but it is not the only one. For example, if there is no sunlight, various factors such as lack of calcium, which makes it difficult for vitamin D to be produced in the skin, irregular life and stress that prevent calcium absorption, alcohol and cigarettes, etc., are working. We also know that people with AIDS have high levels of parathyroid hormone in the blood, which supports calcium deficiency. Cold is also related to calcium. A cold, like AIDS, is a disease caused by a viral infection, but it is often caused by overexertion or lack of calcium due to stress. Because of this, there are many people who say that they did not catch a cold by consuming enough calcium. Tuberculosis is no exception. In the absence of chemotherapy, the only treatment for tuberculosis was air, rest, and sunlight. At that time, milk and butter were also valuable foods to treat tuberculosis. There was even an example of eating 200g of butter a day and it got better. Rather than worrying regarding the high cholesterol in butter, they tried to activate calcium absorption by consuming butter’s vitamins and increase immunity through this. The same goes for children’s disease. Before the advent of antibiotics, most of the causes of death in children were infections such as diarrhea, enteritis, and pneumonia. It can be seen from the diet at the time that they also tried to increase their resistance by consuming a lot of calcium. Mothers used to feed calcium to their children diligently according to the delivery of experience. From a mild illness like a cold to a scary ‘Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome’ like AIDS, it has been revealed that it is related to calcium deficiency, but it seems that it takes time for ordinary people to notice.
