How AI is Revolutionizing Job Applications: Benefits and Challenges for Job Seekers

Artificial Intelligence is profoundly transforming the job application landscape, streamlining certain elements while simultaneously introducing new challenges, according to NBC News.

The advent of AI technology coincides with a record surge in job searching activity, with a staggering over 28% of Americans actively seeking new employment as of August 28. With the growing prevalence of AI in hiring practices, many job seekers find themselves compelled to adopt innovative strategies to differentiate themselves in an increasingly competitive environment.

Content creator Jeff shared his bold approach to preparing for several job interviews in a TikTok video, stating, “You have to be willing to be f—–g crazy.” He revealed that he utilized ChatGPT at every stage of his application process—from assisting in crafting his resume to connecting with current employees and mastering potential interview questions.

Conversely, the rise of AI has elicited mixed reactions from recruiters and hiring personnel.

Maddie Macho, a reverse recruiter who aids applicants in managing their job applications, expressed concerns in a TikTok video, stating, “What AI is doing is actually just creating more noise. … Normal people who are not using AI are hurting in the job market, and then they have to go start using AI to apply to jobs to be competitive.”

With the aid of cutting-edge AI tools, applicants now have the ability to effortlessly revise resumes and cover letters, acquire real-time interview scripts, and deploy chatbots that can submit thousands of job applications in the blink of an eye.

For some, the incorporation of AI is perceived as a valuable resource that enhances the job application process within a competitive market. However, others express concerns regarding the authenticity of applicants and the overall integrity of the recruitment process.

Chantal Cowie, identifying as a “zillennial,” initiated her job search during the early rise of AI applications such as ChatGPT and Gemini.

“I was working like 60 hours a week at the time, so any time I could save was precious,” she explained about her busy schedule.

When applying for positions, Cowie utilized ChatGPT to input her professional background, which enabled the AI to generate tailored cover letters and respond to application questions. This approach allowed her “to apply to more [jobs] in a shorter period of time.”

After securing a job, she was laid off and found herself back in the job market nine months later. By that time, AI technology had evolved remarkably. Cowie was able to leverage specialized platforms like Teal to refine her resume and Claude to scrutinize company websites and job descriptions.

Cowie remarked, “I would make it further in interview rounds. I was making it to the second-to-last round or the last round for most of the interviews that I had.” She attributed this success to the enhanced preparedness afforded by her additional tools.

Cowie took to social media to detail how her AI-integrated strategy facilitated her transition to a “six-figure, fully remote job.”

“AI is going to be integrated in our lives at every level, and it’s here to stay,” she stated confidently in an interview with NBC News. “You might as well learn how to use it to your advantage and add a new skill set.”

As artificial intelligence continues to gain traction and usability, an increasing number of platforms have emerged, catering effectively to job applicants’ needs.

Innovative services like LazyApply, Simplify, and AI Hawk are designed to streamline the application process, utilizing AI-driven assistants to gather applicant information and automate job submissions on platforms such as LinkedIn and Indeed. By utilizing these tools, job seekers can potentially save countless hours while applying to hundreds—or even thousands—of jobs each day.

AI Apply, which boasts that its users are “80% more likely to get hired,” offers a suite of tools that includes a cover letter and resume builder, an auto-apply function, an interview practice generator, and a specialized interview buddy. Access to these premium services begins at $38 per month, as detailed on the website—a much more affordable alternative compared to traditional career counseling fees.

“We’re doing what every job seeker is told to do by a career coach, which is customize and tailor your resume to every job you’re applying to,” stated AI Apply CEO Aidan Cramer in an interview with NBC News.

While watchdog agencies have raised alarms over the risks of AI hallucination and errors associated with AI tools, Cramer contends that AI Apply is meticulously structured to interpret individual skill sets and translate them into application-relevant language—rather than fabricating experiences.

“AI is prone to hallucination,” Cramer noted. “If someone was using ChatGPT to update their resume, you’re giving it a very small amount of context. It’s more prone to make stuff up, because it doesn’t really understand exactly what you’re trying to do.”

“The way we’ve tried to build it is that when you input the job description, that acts as some kind of grounding. So the level of hallucination is a lot lower,” he elaborated further.

A spokesperson from OfferGoose, a company boasting a 300% higher-than-average success rate with its AI interview assistance features, aligned with Cramer’s perspective.
