Houthi Missiles Injure 9 Israelis

Nine Israelis were injured as they rushed to shelters after a surface-to-surface missile was launched from Yemen toward central Israel on Sunday (September 15). A surface-to-surface missile was detected entering the country from the east and landed in an open area.

As reported by Anadolu, Monday (16/9), the Israeli military added that the missile was launched from Yemen, and the explosion heard moments earlier was caused by an interceptor missile. The Israeli military also said the results of the interception were being investigated.

Daily Haaretz reported that the missile landed in an open area in central Israel on Sunday morning. After being detected, alarms were activated in illegal settlements in central Israel, and interceptor missiles were launched from the Arrow and Iron Dome systems. The military is still determining whether the interception was completely successful.

Haaretz also said shrapnel from the interceptor missile landed at a train station on the outskirts of Modi’in in central Israel, causing damage. A fire also broke out in an open area in Kfar Daniel near the central Israeli city of Lod as more debris fell.

Israel’s Army Radio reported that the ballistic missile launched from Yemen traveled about 2,000 kilometers, taking about 15 minutes to fly, and the air force was investigating why it was not intercepted before it reached Israel.

The radio added that the air force was considering the possibility that one of the Arrow interceptor missiles partially hit a missile coming from Yemen. Israel’s emergency medical services confirmed in a statement that nine people were lightly injured in various locations in central Israel as they ran to shelters when the alarm sounded. They were taken to several hospitals for treatment.

Separately, a fire broke out at a cement factory in Ramla at the time of the missile strike. According to Israel’s Channel 14, the fire started on a conveyor belt at the Nesher plant. The fire was reported at 6:30 a.m. local time, just as the countrywide missile defense system was activated.

The cause of the fire is being investigated by the fire department. Yemen’s Houthi rebels have targeted Israeli-owned, flagged, operated or bound for Israeli ports in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden with missiles and drones in solidarity with Gaza, which has been under intense Israeli attack since Oct. 7.
