Housing Assistance Controversy: Impact on Moroccans Living Abroad (MREs)

As of January 5, 24% of the 7,961 registered to receive housing assistance are Moroccans living abroad (MRE). The new direct housing assistance program launched by King Mohammed VI to replace the 250,000 DH apartment program is arousing the interest of MREs. Only Moroccans residing in Morocco or abroad, who are not property owners in Morocco and who have never benefited from housing assistance, will be the beneficiaries of the aid. But the inclusion of MREs in the program raises heated controversies.

On the web, criticisms and questions are emerging among Moroccan Internet users. Some think that the ideal would be to exclude MREs from the program or to make Moroccans residing in Morocco the only beneficiaries. Others are worried regarding the idea that housing purchased by MREs under this program will fuel the black market, resulting in an explosion in rental prices. But according to the Ministry of Housing, once an owner, resident or not, the person concerned cannot rent their property, nor even use it professionally. MREs will be required to keep this accommodation for 5 years as their main residence in the Kingdom. They can also make them available free of charge for the benefit of their spouses, ascendants or descendants in the first degree direct line.

“It’s housing assistance for the most deprived in principle. Integrating MREs amounts to circumventing the goal. People are not once morest helping mothers but once morest diverting aid in favor of others for whom it is not intended,” comments an Internet user on X quoted by H24info. “ […] I don’t know if MREs are eligible even economically, because this type of housing is for the most precarious. I don’t know of any MRE households surviving on €500 per month, locals with this type of income much more frequently,” writes another. “To boost sales by 1, and 2, every MRE aspires to return to the country one day at least upon retirement. So I don’t actually understand certain comments…”, an X user is indignant.
