The SPÖ has just gone through the worst days in decades – through their own fault. The Extraordinary Federal Party Congress to select a new party leader turned into a disaster. Hans Peter Doskozil thought he was the supposed winner, but the party congress turned into a nightmare for him and the whole party. The electoral commission made catastrophic mistakes, the votes were mixed up, and so two days later, and after repeated counting, it was not Doskozil but Andreas Babler who became the SPÖ’s new chairman and top candidate for the National Council. Babler now has to get the party back on track and try to make up for the massive loss of confidence. Not an easy task, especially since he himself has caused irritation with a number of positions in recent years, such as clear anti-EU statements. Marcus Blecha traces the chaotic week of the SPÖ.

human rights violations
UN Human Rights Commissioner Volker Türk sees dramatic setbacks in human rights worldwide. People from Sudan to Ukraine to Myanmar and Afghanistan endure the consequences of conflict and oppression every day, the Austrian Türk said at a human rights conference in Vienna this week. Claus Bruckmann was present at a discussion between Türk and the members of the National Council’s Human Rights Committee.
Democracy export
Parliament in Vienna has been running the Democracy Workshop for 16 years. In four-hour workshops, children and young people learn how democracy and parliamentarism work. Sometimes Members of Parliament come and tell the participants about their everyday work. The courses are fully booked for months. For several years, Parliament has also been exporting this know-how to countries in the Western Balkans that have a shorter tradition of democracy. Claus Bruckmann has attended such workshops here and there.
