House of Horror in Courcelles: Rescuing 34 Stray Cats in Poor Condition

Courcelles. A house that only has the name and looks more like a dump. Inside, chaos, insalubrity, ignominy. Disgust is at the edge of our lips. There are no words to describe the spectacle of human decay pushed to its climax. These are the words written by Christopher Dheulin, director of the refuge of the non-profit association Les Animals des Animaux (Feluy), on social networks. His association picked up 34 cats, covered with fleas, some probably suffering from ringworm, and many of them with colds. Contacted, he explained to us in what context his association intervened in this house of horror in Courcelles: “There were at least 4-5 litters of kittens which were mixed, we do not know who the mothers are. Some are still very young, they are wild and fierce, but we can see that they are used to human contact. All in the middle of trash, with fleas everywhere and no more food…”

They found 34 stray, near-feral cats in poor condition

First called on the spot for stray cats to be sterilized – the association has an agreement with the Commune of Courcelles – the Friends of Animals quickly realized that dozens of cats were going to feed at one address. When they intervened, they found that the tenants of the house had been evicted and had left the cats behind. “It doesn’t suit us, because they could have helped us catch them. I won’t comment on the privacy of these people, but it’s the same problem you see everywhere with cats: people feed them but don’t sterilize them,” he says. “And when there are 2 or 3 unsterilized cats, they breed. And if a good soul feeds them, we quickly go to 20 or 30 cats… This is a problem for the local fauna, mice, field mice, birds, but also for the cats themselves, other animals of company, even humans. Because there are fleas, diseases, etc. While it is enough to have your animal sterilized.”

Captured animals will be put up for adoption in the shelter, if possible

Normally, when the association captures feral cats, they are sterilized and released on the spot. There are too many here. “We collected 34 minimum. Already, they will all go to our veterinarian for a complete check-up and sterilization. If they are wild, we will have no choice but to release them, at a place that will be discussed with the Commune. If they are sociable, on the other hand, we will try to take them to the shelter to offer them for adoption. All the kittens will also stay at the shelter with the mothers.”
