Hotels in Cuba recognized among the best in the world

Two Cuban hotels, the Iberostar Grand Packard in Havana and the Mystique Trinidad La Popa by Royalton in Trinidad, are among the top 25 in the world, according to Tripadvisor’s Travelers’ Choice Awards Best of the Best 2024.

This recognition is based on opinions and reviews from millions of Tripadvisor users over a year. Only one percent of establishments on the platform achieve this prestigious award, which highlights the importance of the distinction, highlights the Excellencies Cuba site.

Iberostar Grand Packard

Located on the iconic Paseo del Prado, close to iconic landmarks such as El Floridita and La Bodeguita del Medio, the Iberostar Grand Packard has established itself as a benchmark for luxury and sustainability in Havana. Ranked fifth worldwide, this hotel is part of the most exclusive category of the Spanish chain Iberostar: Grand.

Opened in 1911 as the Biscuit Hotel, the building has witnessed the evolution of Havana throughout the 20th century. In the 1930s, it was named Packard in honour of the car brand that dominated the city’s streets.

Today, the renovated Iberostar Grand Packard has 321 rooms and demonstrates its commitment to sustainability, thanks to the “Wave of Change” program, which promotes the circular economy, responsible fish consumption and coastal protection.

Mystique Trinidad La Popa

Meanwhile, in the historic city of Trinidad, the Mystique Trinidad La Popa by Royalton, operated by the Canadian chain Blue Diamond Resorts, is ranked 19th in the world ranking.

This boutique hotel, located on the top of La Popa Hill, offers panoramic views of the city, known for its perfectly preserved colonial architecture. Trinidad, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1988, finds in Mystique La Popa a valuable ally in preserving its legacy.

With 52 exclusive rooms, this five-star hotel, designed only for adults, is built on the ruins of an old military hospital, offering an intimate and luxurious experience ideal for couples and travelers looking to immerse themselves in Cuban culture. In addition, it has become an attractive destination for events and incentive groups, according to the aforementioned specialized portal.

Low tourist rate in Cuba

Although tourism in Cuba continues to decline, as shown by data from the National Office of Statistics and Information (ONEI) reporting a 1.8% decrease in the number of international travelers between January and July 2024 compared to the same period in 2023, investments in the tourism sector remain a priority.

According to economist Pedro Monreal, almost 40% of investments in Cuba are destined for activities related to tourism (vs. the reduced relative weight of agricultural investment, barely 2.5% of total investment).

The specialist considered interesting “the rapid growth of recent investment in the “hotels and restaurants” component, despite the low occupancy rate of 28.4%”.
