Hotel and Catering Industry Jobs: Opportunities and Growth in 2023

There are places to be taken in this sector with a bright future. More than 200,000 jobs were vacant in the hotel and catering industry in 2023, according to the Union of Hotel Trades and Industries (Umih), the main employers’ union in the profession. If the catering sector is particularly struggling to hire, the hotel sector is also looking for staff to swell its ranks.

A sector under tension

Some 66.8% of hotel establishments encountered difficulties recruiting employees in 2023, according to Pôle emploi. The so-called “floor” professions – such as maid and valet, housekeeper or housekeeper – assistant – are those which would appeal the least to candidates. As in the catering industry, staggered hours, intermittent work, prolonged standing and unattractive pay are said to be the main reasons for this desertion. A phenomenon which has increased since the end of the pandemic (31.2% of permanent contracts in the sector ended following resignation in 2022, compared to 27.7% in 2019, according to Dares).
“The Covid-19 crisis was an accelerator of phenomena that we had noticed for a long time. We had a feeling that there would be improvements to be made. The fact is that, for thirty years, professional organizations have sought to improve the management of very small businesses (VSE), which constitute 90% of companies in our sector,” explains Hervé Becam, vice-president of Umih, in an interview given to Pôle emploi in 2022.

A breeding ground for employment

If you are interested in the hotel industry, you should know that an agreement was reached in 2022 regarding remuneration (the basic monthly salary index for the sector increased by 4.6% between 2022 and 2023 according to Dares) and that negotiations on working conditions and overtime pay are underway. Given the labor crisis that the sector is currently experiencing, you will not have trouble finding a job quickly, particularly in very touristy regions, such as Île-de-France, Provence- Alpes-Côte d’Azur or Corsica.
Among the most sought-following positions, we find receptionists, night watchmen, concierges, maids and valets, housekeepers, line managers and even accommodation managers. To train in these professions, several paths are possible: CAP Marketing and services in hotel café-restaurant, BP housekeeper, STHR techno baccalaureate (Sciences and technologies of the hotel and restaurant industry), BTS Management in hotel and restaurant industry, license professional Hospitality and tourism… Please note that the hotel sector recruits at all levels, regardless of diplomas and qualifications.
