Hot and Sunny Weather Alert: Summer Begins in Belgium with Record-Breaking Heat

2023-09-03 18:43:00

After two months of particularly capricious weather – not to say rotten – during which Belgium will have been very wet, summer will finally be able to begin. All weather models confirm that the next few days should be dry, hot and sunny. So much so that some daily heat records might be broken this week. “At the start of the meteorological autumn (Editor’s note: which begins on September 1, unlike the astronomical autonomous period which begins on September 21), we will be able to benefit from summer conditions”, confirms Pascal Mormal, meteorologist at the Royal Institute of Meteorology (IRM).

Finally something to boost the morale of the Belgians, at half mast due to the very humid conditions recorded since the end of June. “We should enjoy a long anticyclonic period with temperatures higher than normal for the season, continues the meteorologist. Forecast models report temperatures hovering around 28-29 degrees in general. And, locally, we might even approach 30-31 degrees. That is still almost 10 degrees above the normal for the season, which is around 20-21 degrees at this time of year.”

Weather: an assessment of the summer, to say the least contrasting, and surprising, “the summer was not so rotten as that…”

“Positive weather anomalies” which are “far from negligible without being exceptional”, estimates Pascal Mormal who recalls that the maximum temperatures recorded in September at the Uccle station were 34.3 degrees on September 15, 2020. This week, however, we might tease daily records approaching 30-31 degrees. It is not unthinkable that we can beat a few of them locally this week.”

Can we therefore already speak of an Indian summer? “It’s an expression that is used a lot in the media but this phenomenon describes more periods of severe heat stroke following the first frosts in the Northeastern United States and Canada, in October/November. Meteorologically speaking, we will speak, for what concerns us here, rather of quite hot off-season weather.”

Until when will we be able to benefit from these finally favorable conditions? “The anticyclonic blockage will last a few days, maybe even ten. And some of the most optimistic models believe it might possibly even last beyond mid-September. What is certain is that we will have a tendency towards fundamentally hot and dry weather, with the longest anticyclonic sequence observed since June.

According to the forecasts of the IRM, the days of Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday should be the hottest, accompanied by a completely bluish sky that we have not known for several weeks.

A hot off-season that will not only affect our country. In France, an episode of very strong heat should indeed also affect France in the coming days with there also the possibility that heat records, for the season, will be broken locally.

According to Meteo France forecastswe might reach scorching temperatures close to 35 degrees near Limoges, in New Aquitaine, and sometimes even up to 40 degrees locally.
