The second and third day at the Lido Sounds Festival was a journey across a wide variety of music styles, generations and of course vibes!
Saturday, 17.06.2023
The rain from the previous day was over and in the bright sunshine I and my companion reached the bank of the Danube. With two stages, I quickly found my way around the festival grounds and made it to the opening of the main stage on time.
“It was a welcome change.”aymz“, and therefore a woman can be seen as opener on the main stage. She also heated things up a lot with guitar rock – but that wasn’t actually necessary, because while I don’t remember much regarding the music, the heat of the day has burned itself into my memory. That’s why I didn’t look at the entire set and instead decided to stay more at the edge of the crowd in the shadows.
I found a lot of shade in the tent – where the smaller ahoy! pop stage was located. it just occurred at that time “the lodge“, who I didn’t know and was so curious regarding what he was doing. His music was a mixture of singing and rap, and he sometimes even sat at the piano. Majan had stepped in at short notice for an unusual act, but quite a large part of the audience was clamoring to see him. and for me it was definitely the discovery of the weekend! The band stayed in the background, there were only inconspicuous bright lights and no screen or banners on the stage. He attracted everyone’s attention with his soulful voice alone.
then I was told that I absolutely needed the “beat steaks“should look at. It was smart to book the band on the same day as the Toten Hosen, at least I got the impression that the fans were the same. After watching for a few minutes, I thought it was a shame that I didn’t stay with Majan longer.
„sdpAfterwards I skipped it and walked around the grounds instead. The food stalls didn’t differ much from those at other Austrian festivals – both in terms of offerings and the (very high) prices. From a distance I also noticed that there was no view of the main stage thanks to the high technology tower. I really liked the area, but you had to be to the side and quite far in front to really see anything of the stage.
Suddenly a stream of people moved towards Ahoy! pop stage: “ok kid“ was on the program. I was amazed that the singer wore his winter fur hat on stage throughout, despite the temperatures. and put on a performance with a lot of physical effort. A short break followingwards was very convenient for me and with the sun setting, it slowly became bearable on the site.
for “wandaThen a huge crowd gathered once more. And I bet the concert wasn’t just the highlight of the weekend for me. because the band gave absolutely everything. As soon as the first songs were played, the singer went into the crowd and shared a long kiss with a male-looking fan. Enthusiasm and shouts broke through the audience. Wanda set an example for what the festival stands for. The band itself took us on a journey through all of their albums with their most famous songs and I was amazed when, towards the end, the singer of the Beatsteakes suddenly appeared on stage once more. and someone else came along: campino! No, he didn’t mix up the performance time with his band. The three singers showed what festivals are all regarding: you experience overlaps between artists who would never actually share the stage with each other.
For me, Saturday was already a success. but the main act was still coming up: “the dead pants“! I have to admit that I’m not an active dead pants listener. Personally, I’m a big fan of the doctors and like so many of their fans, I’ve never really gotten used to the pants. But I think some of the songs on the radio are quite nice, which prompted me to attend the concert in its entirety. and as a doctor fan I wasn’t disappointed because of course they covered “cry for love” and I got my money’s worth. and although I don’t actively listen to them, their concert was quite successful with short anecdotes and the biggest of their hits.

I rushed my companion to arrive in time for the opening of the Ahoi! pop stage to be there on the last day of the festival, because there was the Viennese “lil julez“ with band on stage. With gentle guitar sounds and an emotional voice, a relaxed atmosphere emerged. There was still a little space left in the tent for dancing and we used it. It was feel-good music and put you in the right mood on Sunday morning… er lunchtime.
One of the things that excited me regarding the Lido Sounds line-up was the focus on Austrian artists. so followed “salò“, from which I expected nothing less than a strong performance. Despite radio problems, he pulled off the performance in full Salò style. with honesty and refreshing lyrics that didn’t give me the feeling that I had ever heard that anywhere before (except at his other concerts). So it wasn’t surprising that the tent was packed – and he was only the second act.
I looked forward to what the day would offer. Friends recommended by me “jeremiah“ on the main stage. It was refreshing to see a woman on stage, albeit way back at the keyboard and not part of the actual band. The band’s singer enchanted everyone with his charming smile, shallow pop sounds and some song regarding Harry Styles. The music wasn’t exciting enough to grab me and I was constantly distracted by the bass player, who I might have sworn I’d seen in an advert in Abercombie and Fitch before. wasn’t he getting hot in his denim overalls?
At least I was too warm and so I waited on the banks of the Danube until “cro“finally played. While I didn’t listen to it much in private, it was part of every celebration during my school days. Despite his eye-catching glitter pants, I kept losing him in everything that was going on on stage. The stage set-up changed every three to four songs. There were flying flowers and even a bouncy castle to which he invited the “snazzy girls” (his quote) in the front rows. I wasn’t very impressed with his choice of words, especially since he kept repeating himself. There mightn’t just be good-looking people of one gender in the front rows, right? But otherwise I didn’t feel any spark of joy or enthusiasm in the music. Since it was his first festival of the year, maybe he still needed to warm up?
I had saved some energy which I spent on “apache 207“might release completely. Yes, that’s the one that helped Udo Lindenberg get his first number one hit in the German charts. This rap singer was also not spared from problems with his radio and apologized if he sang out of tune – only he didn’t sing out of tune. on the contrary.
He put on a great performance and I heard from my companion, who had previously only met him with a slightly raised eyebrow, that she was also absolutely thrilled with his performance. His stage setup contrasted in its simplicity with everything Cro had done before. Apache alone had enough for a replica gas station and a car. less is sometimes more. He never seemed lost on stage, on the contrary – you can really talk regarding stage presence with him. Only the stage wasn’t always his stage, because as is his custom, he drove a boat through the crowd towards the end of the concert. a highlight for those who didn’t know him and always an experience for those who know him.
From the boat we went to Apache’s garden house, where he sang several songs. Those who didn’t get a seat at the front of the wavebreaker were lucky here, because the garden house was in the middle of the crowd. Accompanied by Celine Dion’s “My Heart Will Go On” it finally led him back on the boat. But not without an encore, to which he invited his entire circle of friends on stage and everyone gave it their all together once once more. So I was actually at the end of my energy.
Nevertheless, I then went to the last act of the festival: “peter fox“. I knew exactly one song by him and I wasn’t impressed with it. I didn’t understand what my friends thought was so great regarding him – until the concert. Right from the first song, no one stood still. His music invited you to dance, with the right amount of atmospheric lyrics and melodic interludes. Peter Fox himself also danced extensively on stage with his band and ultimately with dozens of selected fans. The atmosphere on stage was a celebration of friends.
For me, the Lido Sounds Festival was the definition of a wonderful start to summer. It felt like a sunny day with strawberry punch and a summer breeze in my hair and a lightness that I hadn’t felt in at least the last three years. I’m only too excited for the coming years!
