The FM4 Frequency Festival offered three days of sun, music and confetti rain!

When I looked at this year’s frequency schedule, I noticed that I had a lot of gaps. because some acts didn’t mean anything to me and others I didn’t necessarily have to watch.
However, who I had to take with me: “only the poets“. On the first day, the band opened the green stage, one of the two main stages, in the scorching heat. Not only was it uncomfortable standing in the blazing sun with no water station in sight, but the ground itself also caused discomfort.
Not only did I find it difficult to walk and dance on the large gravel stones, I also worried regarding people who might lose their balance on them and hurt themselves. For me, that dampened the mood during Only the Poets’ set – but not so for other visitors, who were already singing along to the songs loudly during the sound check. There was already a certain tension and anticipation in the air. and: it didn’t rain, that was nice too.
Immediately followingwards I looked for a place to acclimatise and recharge my batteries – so I ended up at a food stand. I didn’t really discover anything exciting, but the seating area from wieselburger turned out to be recommended. It offered shade, you might chat and always find a place to sit, including a table. As I was leaving I also discovered a glitter station where you might get glitter applied for free.
and then it said to me “tom gregoryon the program that I knew from the radio. and he had a lot to offer. Armed alone with his microphone stand, he enchanted the entire frequency audience with a lot of charisma. Tom Gregory didn’t give a long speech, dance exceptionally well, or put on an impressive stage show. But he didn’t need any of that to become one of my favorite performances of the festival weekend.
then I switched to “limp bizkit“ – but I only looked at the band from the edge. As familiar as I was with their band name, their music meant nothing to me. I had the feeling that the band had stood still in time. With their oversized t-shirts and low-hanging pants and the singer’s gold chain dazzling all the way to the back row, they looked a bit like time travelers.
The contrast program subsequently started with “macklemore“, who brought fresh dance music with him. Anyone who wasn’t in a good mood with him probably had their own fault. Because Macklemore offered everything: water showers, various dancers, great lyrics with melodies and an epic dance battle with two people from the audience.
After the concert ended, the audience mingled between the main stages and the night park. because following Macklemore stepped “the doctors” on. Now I understood why limp bizkit were performing that day. I was curious to see whether the doctors had what it took to get the audience on their side following Macklemore.

At the beginning of the performance, she said that they hadn’t had any contact with each other for five weeks and that they were basically seeing each other once more for the first time on the Frequency stage. so they chatted incredibly much. But you don’t go to a doctors’ concert to listen to music, but to watch a stand-up comedy program.
Nevertheless, I expected songs like “Westerland” that everyone knew, even if they had never been to a doctors’ concert. Unfortunately, their setlist was designed more for an audience that had grown up with the doctors, so the mood became increasingly sluggish towards the end. The band basically never recorded, but due to additional technical problems, the doctor’s magic simply didn’t translate.
Sobering up, I made my way to the shuttle bus and it was far more exciting there than at the last concert. The reason: there were too few shuttle buses to the train station. Anyone who didn’t have a wristband wasn’t allowed to go, anyone who had one had to worry regarding getting on one of the buses and catching the last train to Vienna.
I would have loved to have been spared this excitement and frustration. The first day started slowly because of the heat and ended nerve-wracking because of the shuttle bus situation.

new day, new confidence. Once once more there weren’t many acts that I really wanted to go to. So I walked aimlessly across the area and was amazed when I heard the music from “clockclock“, but the name of the band was unknown to me. So clockclock was a kind of festival discovery for me – except that I didn’t get to know the music, but the faces.
Then I found myself with the Berlin rapper “coffee“ once more, who played on the red bull stage in the hall. and in this hall you had a good view from everywhere. Even though Kafvka was only the second act of the day, the room was already pretty full.
And in front of such a large audience he dared to talk regarding the fact that he actually didn’t like the Red Bull company and that it seemed so paradoxical that he still appeared on the stage that they financed. By speaking out once morest them, he might no longer be invited, but others would invite him precisely because he was talking regarding things that were important to him.
Even though rap isn’t really my thing, I found Kafvka’s performance quite appealing. He went wild with jumps and turns all over the stage, where his band was next to him. He wasn’t what I expected from a German-speaking rapper and I liked that.
Afterwards I went back outside into the sun for myself “calum scott” as well as “tom odellto look at. Both were music for me to relax. a little break from dancing and singing. I was also sobered to realize that I only knew one song by Tom Odell and of course he only played it at the very end of his set, when I was already on the way to the Red Bull stage.
played on the red bull stage “picture this“ – the members had so much fun with the music and the energy was transferred to the audience. Even if you didn’t know a song, the music made you move. I think I wasn’t the only one who remembered the name of the band.
Later I tried to switch to the green stage, but the flow of visitors between the main stages was now so huge that I went to “central cee“ took place on the space stage. However, I was quickly put off by the poor sound and the bad mood of the audience.
I made a second attempt to get to the green stage – and I arrived just in time for the start of “electric callboy” at. The band had many fans in the audience who went full throttle from the first confetti cannon. While I really liked one singer’s voice, I still found that I mightn’t do much with the music. What should I do now if I don’t like music? That’s right, meeting friends and acquaintances.
And so the time went by relatively quickly until the main act of the day came: “imagine dragons“. Because of her, the main stage was converted into a catwalk. I didn’t know anyone in my personal environment who said they listened to Imagine Dragons. So I was a bit amazed at how many people around me seemed to like this band and might sing along to all of the songs.
In any case, I wasn’t disappointed for a second by her performance. Everything was right, from start to finish. The band demonstrated their close friendship on stage, gave speeches regarding important topics such as mental health, actively campaigned for queer rights and topped the whole thing off with a good portion of confetti, colorful balls and impressive pyro effects. and every song was a hit. really every one. From “thunder” to “natural”, even “enemy”, one of my personal favorite songs – they had it all.
The atmosphere of “Demons” was so heartbreakingly beautiful that my eyes mightn’t stay dry. Imagine Dragons definitely moved something in me, so I can only recommend everyone to go to a concert.

The last day of the festival started for me with the band “province“. During their concert there was also the first surprise appearance: “you people“ came on stage for a song and the crowd erupted in enthusiasm.
A little later I also looked at “the aces“ on the red bull stage, which appeared in Austria for the first time. I had previously seen many videos of them that filled me with exciting anticipation. But unfortunately there was something in the air and it wasn’t a good spell. Was the four of them exhausted from traveling around or was the audience already too exhausted? Whatever it was, there was just no mood.
It was completely different with “air“, for which the hall suddenly filled to capacity. There was still some room at the back for dancing. Ajr brought comedic performances that made the audience laugh. and they animated their audience: whether it was clapping, swinging their arms or repeating a line of a song. I definitely left the concert in a great mood.
and then at some point came “strength club“. The band from Chemnitz was the icing on the cake – they were exactly what the festival was missing. Looking back, it’s difficult to put into words how good their concert was if you weren’t there yourself.
Kraftklub played their great hits like “chemie chemie ya” and “songs for liam”, but then brought an almost eerie calm to the festival with “angst”, where at the end the audience alone sang quieter and quieter. Then part of the band went into the crowd and performed a few songs directly from the audience area.
Afterwards, frontman Felix Kummer rolled back to the stage from behind over the entire audience to the sounds of “500K”. A fan was allowed to spin a song wheel, which stopped at a song, which the Kraftklub then had to play. Once the wheel stopped at “love for three” – the red confetti cannons then fought a battle with the pyrofountains to see who might spray higher. it was a celebration.
In the end, I was almost no longer angry that we had to go through the hassle of taking the shuttle buses to catch the train to Vienna. In the end all that’s left to say is: every day always took a while to get going, but in the end it was always worth it to show up and persevere. Every day there was something absolutely outstanding. For the future, I would just like to see more shuttle buses so that public arrival and departure doesn’t pose too much of a problem and the mood isn’t dampened!
