Under high tension last summer, hospitals are still overheated. Between regulation and temporary closure, many emergency services, throughout the territory, are forced to adapt, for lack of available nursing staff.
“It’s unheard of,” sighs Patrick Pelloux, president of the Association of Emergency Physicians (AMUF). The problem is not so much the closures as the random, novel aspect. Last week, a doctor fell ill in Saint-Tropez (Var) and the emergency room immediately had to close. »
Regulation of the salary of temporary doctors
Particularly tense in the summer, the situation has worsened in tourist areas. Aurélien Rousseau, the new Minister of Health, recognized “extremely strong tension, especially in sectors with a lot of holidaymakers”, during his trip to the Toulouse University Hospital on Monday. “We cannot be satisfied, in our country, with having places where the emergency room remains closed at night”, he declared once more at the end of July in an interview with “Le Monde”.
Present this Monday in Toulouse, Sandrine Charpentier, president of the French Society of Emergency Medicine, welcomed the fact that the new minister is “perfectly aware of the issues”. Still, the situation in the emergency room seems particularly worrying this summer.
“Deplorable working conditions”
One of the explanations lies in the establishment of the Rist law. Entering into force in April, it caps medical interim at 1,390 euros per guard. As a direct consequence, the temporary doctors are less present in the summer period and the hospitals which usually used them pay the costs. “It’s messed up but it’s only temporary”, tries to reassure Olivier Mimoz, head of the emergency department – Samu 86.
The heart of the problem, however, lies in the shortage of medical personnel, in particular nurses. According to Thierry Amouroux, spokesperson for the National Union of Nurses, there are no less than 60,000 vacant nursing positions, the fault in particular of “deplorable working conditions and too low remuneration”. “We gave everything during the Covid, we thought there would be a world following,” he regrets.
