Cork Hospital Receives Life-saving Equipment Thanks to Bottle Recycling Initiative
Cork University Hospital (CUH) has acquired crucial medical equipment thanks to a heartwarming recycling initiative led by three porters named John, John, and John. Their dedication to collecting and recycling plastic bottles and cans has raised an remarkable €20,000 over seven months. The origin of this remarkable fundraising effort began with a simple desire to enjoy a Chinese takeaway at the end of their night shifts. The trio initially planned to cash in on the deposit-return scheme for bottles and cans. However, they decided to donate their earnings to CUH Charity, sparking a recycling movement that has become one of the country’s most supported efforts. John Collins with some recycled bottles. Currently, John Collins and John Keenan are spearheading this inspiring effort. They diligently collect bottles and cans from the hospital, redeeming them for cash at local shops. Their dedication has resulted in the purchase of a mobile high-flow oxygen therapy unit, considerably benefiting babies and children battling serious respiratory illnesses such as bronchiolitis, pneumonia, and asthma. “We are overwhelmed that it has enabled the hospital to buy this equipment, or that we would even pass the €10,000 mark,” said Mr. Collins. “We started on May 3rd, and the first donation to CUH Charity was €220.” He added, “There is huge support from inside the hospital, we are collecting 12 bags of bottles and cans a day, averaging between 600 and 800 containers.” Dr. David Mullane, consultant paediatrician at CUH, explained that the new high-flow oxygen therapy unit (Airvo) delivers constant oxygen to infants and children experiencing respiratory distress. This portable machine is crucial for those needing movement between different hospital areas or transfer to intensive care. dr. Mullane emphasized its significance, saying, “This new piece of equipment will provide seamless transfer while maintaining Airvo delivery, enabling us to deliver the optimum care for patients in respiratory distress.” Claire Concannon, executive director of CUH Charity, expressed immense gratitude for the porters’ tireless efforts. She said, “To think that they have continued this incredible effort in their own time and made such a difference to young patients at the hospital, is a wonderful testament to their character, they deserve all the praise they receive.”## Archyde Exclusive: Meet the Porters Who Fuelled a Medical Miracle
